EU Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods Could Escalate Trade War

The European Commission has announced new tariffs on U.S. products worth €26 billion in response to Washington’s tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The EU duties will take effect on April 1, with full implementation by April 13. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has already vowed retaliation.
"We are entering a trade war between the EU and the United States, and we will see many such retaliatory measures from both sides," said MEP Anna Bryłka.
On March 12, the U.S. imposed 25 percent tariffs on EU steel and aluminum imports. The EU’s response includes reinstating €8 billion in suspended tariffs from 2018 and 2020, plus an additional €18 billion in new tariffs. Targeted products include steel, aluminum, poultry, beef, nuts, and sugar.
The European Commission will finalize the list of affected goods after consulting EU member states, as tensions between Brussels and Washington escalate.
