The European Commission (EC) has launched infringement proceedings against Poland and 16 other EU countries for failing to fully implement the directive on gender balance in corporate boardrooms. The EC found that Poland has only partially fulfilled its obligations.
Under the directive, by June 2026, at least 40 percent of non-executive director positions or 33 percent of all leadership roles in publicly traded companies must be held by the underrepresented gender. Member states were required to transpose the law into national legislation by December 28, 2024.
Poland, alongside France, Portugal, Bulgaria, Denmark, and Ireland, has made partial progress, while countries like Czechia, Estonia, Greece, and Hungary have yet to implement the directive. Poland now has two months to address the gaps.
