GUS: millions of Poles work without full-time job contract

At the end of September 2024, around 2.4 million people in Poland were employed under contract agreements (umowy zlecenia and similar), mostly in the private sector and small businesses, according to GUS (Statistics Poland). About 89.6% of these workers were in the private sector, with the largest share—18.3%—in administration and support services, including temporary employment agencies. Another 12.2% worked in healthcare and social assistance.
GUS noted that contract workers are not officially classified as part of the national economy workforce, though 1.004 million also had jobs meeting national employment criteria.
Small businesses dominate the Polish economy, with 97% of registered firms employing fewer than 10 people. By December 2024, the REGON register recorded 1.545 million legal entities and organizational units, marking a 3.7% increase from 2023.
