Le Monde: rearming Europe requires coordination with Poland

French newspaper "Le Monde" reports that rearming Europe is a priority due to the growing Russian threat, requiring a significant increase in defense spending and coordination among key nations, including Poland.
Experts Alexandr Burilkov and Guntram Wolff highlight that Russia’s army is now stronger, more experienced, and better equipped than in 2022, with an expanded defense industry. NATO intelligence estimates that Russia could launch an attack on Europe within three years, making support for Ukraine’s experienced military crucial for deterrence.
To replace potential U.S. reinforcements, Europe would need 300,000 troops, 1,400 tanks, 2,000 infantry vehicles, and millions of artillery shells. Current European defense spending of 0.7% of GDP must increase significantly, with estimates suggesting €250 billion annually to reach 3.5% of GDP.
The authors advocate joint EU military procurement to reduce costs and accelerate production. They also emphasize the need for closer cooperation among France, Germany, the UK, and Poland to ensure Europe’s security.
