Pesa Bydgoszcz, a Polish rail vehicle manufacturer, has received certification for the operation of a hydrogen-powered locomotive. This marks the first homologation procedure of its kind in Poland. The president of the Office of Rail Transport, Ignacy Góra, emphasized the significance of this milestone, as European and national regulations currently lack specific requirements for hydrogen propulsion in rail vehicles.
The locomotive, based on the SM42-6Dn model, is emission-free and environmentally friendly, with identical traction parameters to its diesel counterpart. It can operate in ports, sidings, and local rail networks. Pesa plans to develop additional hydrogen-powered vehicles and also offers hydrogen refueling infrastructure and delivery services in collaboration with partners such as PKN Orlen.
