Poland heavily dependent on energy imports at huge cost
Poland’s energy transition is progressing but remains inconsistent. Renewable energy is growing, yet dependence on imported energy rose from 29% in 2015 to 46% in 2024, creating major costs. In 2025, Poland paid an estimated PLN 104 bln for net imports of energy resources and fuels, including PLN 51 bln for crude oil and PLN 30 bln for natural gas. Gas import dependence reached 82%, while oil remains almost entirely imported, although Poland no longer buys Russian crude.
Coal still generated 52.2% of electricity in 2025, while renewables reached 31.4% and produced a record 54.7 TWh. Poland has also been a net electricity importer since 2023.
