1.6 Million Poles Lack a Toilet at Home

A new “report of shame” cites data from Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS) revealing that about 4.7 percent of dwellings in Poland lack a toilet — equivalent to roughly 800,000 homes, or an estimated 1.6 million people. The problem is even broader when considering bathrooms: 6.1 percent of homes don’t have a dedicated bathroom space. Meanwhile, 2.2 percent of dwellings lack running water — about 350,000 households.
Growth in sanitation infrastructure has been slow. Between 2020 and 2024, access to a toilet improved from 94 percent to 95.3 percent of homes; bathroom access rose from 91.8 percent to 93.9 percent.
The disparity is especially acute in the country’s east and among municipal housing. In Warsaw’s Praga Północ district, nearly 10 percent of municipal flats lacked a toilet, as revealed in earlier city data.
