Energy is in the crosshairs of cyberattacks
Cyberattacks on Poland’s energy infrastructure have shown that system security no longer depends only on major power plants and transmission networks. During CYBERSEC EXPO & FORUM, experts warned that in an increasingly decentralized and digital energy sector, weak points may include renewable energy farms, smart meters, remote access systems, communication modules, or supply-chain components. December’s attacks on wind and solar farms, as well as a combined heat and power plant, showed that threats can emerge on the edges of the system without directly targeting central infrastructure. Speakers stressed the importance of certified equipment, supplier control, secure updates, recovery procedures, and reliable communication.
They also noted that AI can support network defense, but attackers are using it too, including to generate malicious code.
