Four giants race for Polish high-speed trains
Four major rail manufacturers filed applications on June 25 for PKP Intercity's landmark tender to supply Poland's first fleet of high-speed trains capable of 320 km/h. The contenders are Alstom Polska, Spain's Patentes Talgo SL, Siemens Mobility, and a consortium of Japan's Hitachi Rail with Poland's own PESA Bydgoszcz. One notable absence is Newag, Poland's other domestic rail manufacturer, which had been in a cooperation agreement with Siemens but broke it off in the final stretch.
The contract covers 20 electric multiple units with an option for 35 additional sets, plus 30-year maintenance contracts and the design and construction of a dedicated maintenance depot. Trains must carry multi-system homologation for Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria. The first two units must be delivered within five years of contract signing; all 20 within seven years. A decision is expected in October 2027. The sets are destined primarily for the planned Line Y high-speed corridor linking Warsaw with Łódź, Poznań, and Wrocław.
