GUS: extreme poverty in Poland is falling
According to a report published by Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS), the share of people at risk of extreme poverty in Poland fell to 5.2% in 2024, down from 6.6% in 2023. This improvement reflects better average household incomes and spending, as well as reduced income inequality measured by the Gini coefficient. Despite this progress, relative poverty increased to 13.3%. Households of farmers remained the most vulnerable to both extreme and relative poverty, while the least affected were the self-employed, employees, and pensioners.
Disability, rural residence, and lower education significantly increased poverty risk. GUS noted that recent trends may reflect delayed effects of the pandemic, high inflation, and the war in Ukraine.
