PLDCA: energy is Poland’s Achilles heel, but can be an asset
Poland lacks the computing power needed to develop its digital economy, but it still has a chance to catch up in the European data-center market. Krystian Pypłacz of the Polish Data Center Association says Poland is currently in Europe’s “second league,” while hubs such as Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin dominate the market. Frankfurt alone adds as much new capacity each year as Poland’s entire current market.
Poland’s key advantage is available electricity-grid capacity, especially compared with Western hubs facing power shortages. Former industrial sites, including old power plants and factories, could be ideal for data centers because they already have grid connections. Pypłacz argues that AI infrastructure is essential for Poland’s competitiveness, sovereignty, and security, while big-tech data centers could also strengthen Poland’s geopolitical position.
