Ports becoming economic security base and attractive target
Polish seaports handled 128 mln tonnes of cargo in 2025, up 3.1% y/y, according to Statistics Poland. As ports play a growing role in imports of raw materials, fuels and strategic goods, security is becoming increasingly important. Experts warn that threats now include smuggling, GPS interference and possible sabotage. Szczecin, Świnoujście and Gdańsk recorded the strongest cargo growth, while Gdynia and Police saw declines. Liquid bulk cargo dominated port traffic, led by crude oil and petroleum products, followed by dry bulk and containers.
The pandemic and the war in Ukraine exposed the importance of ports for supply chains and energy security. Experts praise Polish services but warn of staffing shortages in customs and border protection.
