NATO wants to extend strategic fuel pipeline from Germany to Poland

NATO faces a critical fuel supply challenge on its eastern flank in the event of a Russian attack, according to experts cited by Der Spiegel. The alliance plans to extend a Cold War-era pipeline network, which currently ends in western Germany, to Poland and the Czech Republic. This expansion is necessary due to the massive fuel demands of military operations, which cannot be met through alternative transport methods.
The project, estimated to cost €21 billion, would be NATO’s largest military infrastructure investment, with €3.5 billion allocated to Germany. While construction of the pipelines is planned for completion by 2035, the project’s future remains uncertain. Funding concerns, particularly after Donald Trump’s U.S. election victory, and opposition from France could delay or block its implementation.
