Tauron: Germany saved by energy imports from Poland
Show lessGermany became a net importer of electricity from Poland in March amid an energy crisis triggered by the U.S.–Iran conflict, according to Krzysztof Zawadzki of Tauron. A surge in gas prices, linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, combined with low wind and solar output in countries like Germany and Italy, drove energy prices sharply higher.
Poland was less affected and was able to export cheaper electricity. Coal played a key stabilizing role in Poland’s energy system, acting as a “safety anchor” during the crisis. The situation highlights coal’s continued importance in ensuring energy security despite ongoing energy transition efforts.
