‘Poland moves away from European values’: MEP Aguilar

Poland is moving away from European values, argued MEP Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar during the debate in the European Parliament. According to him, the reasons why there is a debate on this in the EP are serious – legislative initiatives which represent a serious risk of undermining European values.
A debate on the rule of law in Poland has begun in the European Parliament in Brussels. The discussion is related to the draft report on which MEPs are to vote on Thursday and whose rapporteur is Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar from the Social Democrats.
Aguilar indicated that this was another debate and resolution on Poland in the EP. He added that the EU could not agree that these resolutions were systematically disregarded by any European state.
"We mean a message in which we want Poland to return to the values of the European Union. The EU is not a foreign power or an extraterrestrial ship. We also represent Polish citizens in this assembly," the Spaniard summed up.
The draft resolution, prepared by the Civil Liberties Committee, points to overwhelming evidence of violations of the rule of law, including threats to the independence of the judiciary, the malfunctioning of the legislative and electoral system, and threats to fundamental rights.
According to Jadwiga Wiśniewska, PiS MEP, the document promotes a vision of the situation in Poland detached from reality.
