The Maria nuclear reactor in Świerk, Poland, celebrated its 50th anniversary on December 18, 2024. It is unique globally for lacking stable funding, as highlighted by Prof. Krzysztof Kurek, director of the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ). Maria’s primary function is producing neutrons for cancer diagnostics, radiotherapy, and industrial applications, alongside nuclear training and material research.
Maria’s annual operating costs (around PLN 40 million) are partially covered by commercial activities (1/3), grants (1/3), and specific government subsidies (SPUB). However, delayed funding decisions disrupt management. Prof. Kurek emphasized the reactor’s role as a multidisciplinary national lab rather than a commercial research institute, arguing for stable state funding. Ongoing discussions suggest potential long-term financing solutions.
