Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that Poland’s exit from the EU is becoming a “real threat,” amid a growing dispute over legislation tied to the EU’s €150 billion SAFE defence programme. The conflict centres on a presidential veto of the bill implementing the mechanism, which is designed to finance defence across EU states.

Tusk argues that opposition from parts of the right wing, alongside actions by President Karol Nawrocki, is increasing the risk of “Polexit.” He said critics who view recent developments as a prelude to leaving the EU are “increasingly correct.”

Poland stands to be one of the programme’s biggest beneficiaries, with potential funding of €43.7 billion, of which 89% would support domestic defence firms. Tusk described the veto as undermining Poland’s strategic commitment to both NATO and the EU
