Fuel shock hits fares
A surge in jet fuel costs—up over 90% in Poland since February—will push airfares higher despite Orlen’s recent wholesale price cuts. Global Jet-A1 prices jumped 83% in March, according to International Air Transport Association, driven by tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
Fuel accounts for up to 40% of airline costs, making price rises unavoidable. Industry leaders, including Willie Walsh, warn fares will continue climbing. Airlines have already raised ticket prices by about 10% globally.
While Orlen’s diesel price reductions may slow fuel inflation, they won’t translate into cheaper tickets. LOT Polish Airlines notes fares depend on demand, competition, and global costs, especially as much of its fleet refuels abroad.
