Windfall tax could cost Orlen PLN 6bn
Poland's Minister of State Assets, Wojciech Balczun, confirmed on Friday that draft legislation imposing a windfall profits tax on fuel producers and crude oil traders is in its final stages, with parliamentary passage expected before the end of June. Speaking to Radio Zet, Balczun said the levy — covering the period from March to December 2026 — could cost Orlen, Poland's dominant integrated energy and refining group, approximately PLN 6 billion (roughly USD 1.64bn) this year alone. A second, unnamed market participant faces a bill of between PLN 60 million and PLN 200 million. The announcement sent Orlen's share price sharply lower on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Analysts at Trigon DM warned the legislation's wording remains imprecise, leaving room for significant uncertainty in final tax calculations.
