WSE carries out annual revision of Stock Exchange Indices portfolios

GPW Benchmark, which is the index administrator on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, revised the WIG20, mWIG40, sWIG80, and WIG30 Stock Exchange Indices portfolios. The most important changes concern the qualification of companies to rankings and index portfolios.
"There have been changes in the portfolios of all these indices: in WIG20 there was one change, in mWIG40 five changes, in sWIG80 there were 18 changes, and in WIG30 – three changes,” Małgorzata Odolińska, Head of the Capital Market Indicators Team, GPW Benchmark, said.
Mercator joined WIG20, the index of the twenty largest and most liquid companies, replacing Alior Bank transferred to the mWIG40 index. There were more changes in the mWIG40 index. The new companies, apart from Alior, also include Onco-Arendi Therapeutics, Polenergia, Selvita, and Stalprodukt. The index was left by BNP Paribas Polska, CI Games, Cormay, Mabion, and Mercator, which advanced to WIG20.
The greater number of changes in the indices was caused, inter alia, by the change in the method of developing indexes:
"The changes were preceded by public consultations, which are a requirement of the BMR regulation issued by the European Parliament on indices and indicators. The share of company size in the ranking was increased, while turnover was slightly less important.
in order to reduce the impact of one-off events or short-term trends on the stability of the portfolio structure of major indices,” Małgorzata Odolińska summed up.
The most popular index of the WSE is WIG20, which had its debut on April 16, 1994. Since then, 88 companies have passed through the index, Mercator is the 89th. The initial value of the index was 1,000 points. Today it fluctuates around 2,000. points.
On the other hand, the market value of companies included in the WIG20 index 27 years ago was PLN 8.6 billion. Capitalization of WIG20 companies at the session on March 19 this year exceeded PLN 401.80 billion.
