Residents of eastern Poland deal better with debt than in the west

According to BIG InfoMonitor and BIK data, 8% of adult Poles struggle to repay loans or other financial obligations—about 80 people per 1,000 residents. Debt levels vary regionally: western Poland faces the highest rates, with Lubuskie (107), Zachodniopomorskie (104), and Dolnośląskie (100) leading, while Podkarpackie performs best at 44 per 1,000. The number of debtors fell nationwide, most notably in Pomorskie, Dolnośląskie, and Śląskie. Experts attribute regional differences to economic and social factors—western regions have higher access to credit but also greater risk, while eastern regions borrow less and rely more on family support.
Financial education and responsible borrowing are essential to prevent excessive debt and its social consequences, analysts emphasize.
