Carrefour considers Polish exit
Carrefour’s restructuring plan may include selling its Polish operations, following exits from Italy and potential divestments in Argentina. The retailer currently runs 783 stores in Poland, but according to Dr. Mariusz Woźniakowski of the University of Łódź, its local struggles stem from both internal financial pressures and fierce post-pandemic competition from discount chains.
French outlet La Lettre reported that JP Morgan has begun searching for buyers for the Polish portfolio. While dividing stores among existing players seems likely, wiadomoscihandlowe.pl notes strong interest from Ukraine’s Fozzy Group, whose Silpo chain has long planned a Polish debut.
Meanwhile, Carrefour’s Romanian division—with 458 outlets in 113 cities—may also be sold. Żabka Group, already operating 122 Froo convenience stores in Romania, is reportedly among potential bidders but declined to confirm negotiations, stating only that it continues to evaluate acquisition opportunities.
