Report: shopping becomes more expensive in May by average 3.4% y/y
Retail prices in Poland are still rising, but the pace of growth is slowing. According to the “Retail Store Price Index” by UCE Research and WSB Merito Universities, based on nearly 90,000 retail prices, average store prices increased by 3.4% y/y in May, down from 3.7% in April.
Food prices rose by 2.4% y/y in May, compared with 3.3% in April and 3.2% in March. The authors say this reflects a stronger stabilization trend, supported by intense competition among retail chains, improved supply in some food categories, especially seasonal products, and stable import costs helped by a relatively strong zloty.
However, analysts warn that cost pressure has not disappeared. Energy and fuel costs remain higher y/y, leaving retail prices vulnerable to external shocks.
