Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany's opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has sparked debate with a proposal to limit the influx of migrants through border controls with Poland and the Czech Republic. Merz’s suggestion includes temporarily halting the acceptance of asylum seekers at these borders to manage migration more effectively.
The controversial proposal, seen as a response to growing public concern about migration in Germany, calls for stricter border measures on a trial basis. Merz argues that the German government needs to regain control over migration, but critics fear the move could have negative diplomatic consequences for neighboring countries, particularly Poland.
“This is a temporary measure aimed at addressing a pressing issue. If we can manage migration more efficiently, we may be able to restore order to the process,” Merz stated in an interview.
However, Polish officials have expressed concern that such actions could lead to increased tensions between the two nations and disrupt the free movement of people and goods across EU borders.
