NATO’s Baltic Sentry intends to ensure safety of underwater infrastructure in Baltic Sea

NATO's recent "Baltic Sentry" mission, launched on January 14, 2024, to protect critical underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, has provoked strong reactions from Russia. The mission was initiated after incidents involving damaged cables, including connections between Finland and Estonia, allegedly caused by Russian ships. In response, NATO deployed warships, drones, and patrol aircraft near Estonia to prevent further sabotage.

Russia, angered by NATO's actions, issued warnings through Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, claiming the mission threatens regional navigation and accuses NATO of trying to dominate the Baltic Sea. Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko also linked NATO's actions to Sweden and Finland joining the alliance, pledging military measures to safeguard Russian interests.

NATO remains firm, emphasizing accountability for any threats to its infrastructure.
