Photovoltaics and windmills shutting down as supply exceeds demand
In Poland, non market curtailment of renewable energy production from wind and solar farms reached 1,320 GWh in 2025, almost twice as much as in 2024, according to the Institute for Renewable Energy. Curtailment occurs when electricity supply exceeds demand and grid operators must reduce generation to maintain system balance. The trend is accelerating, with 77 GWh curtailed by the end of February 2026, up 66% y/y. Experts say the main cause is rapid growth in solar capacity combined with insufficient grid infrastructure and system flexibility. Curtailments waste large amounts of clean energy and reduce revenues for renewable investors.
Analysts argue that expanding energy storage, flexible gas generation, and demand response will be necessary to better integrate renewables into Poland’s power system.
