Warning on gender equality
Prominent economists and social commentators warn that Poland is failing to address gender inequality in business and public life, urging authorities to introduce long-delayed reforms. In an open letter, Henryka Bochniarz, founder and former head of the Lewiatan Confederation, philosopher Magdalena Środa and economist Ewa Rumińska-Zimny argue that the government has taken no serious institutional steps to combat discrimination.
Their main demand is the implementation of the EU’s Women on Boards directive to increase female representation on company boards and supervisory councils. The authors also call for adoption of pay-transparency rules requiring companies to report gender wage gaps.
According to the European Institute for Gender Equality, Poland has shown no progress in implementing commitments under the UN Platform on women’s rights. Środa cited research showing men make up 85% of business representatives and 74% of experts, while Lewiatan data shows only 19% of companies are acting.
