Poland and Slovakia want changes to ETS2 directive on heating emissions

Slovakia and Poland are calling for changes to the EU ETS2 directive, which could increase costs in transport and building sectors. The ETS2 system, set to launch in 2027 or 2028, will cover emissions from these sectors. Slovakia has missed deadlines for updating the EU ETS directive and is now pushing for reconsideration of the new system due to potential social impacts.
Poland is also seeking modifications, expressing concerns about the financial burden on citizens. The ETS2 will require purchasing emission permits entirely through auctions, unlike the original EU ETS. Initial permit prices are expected to be high, potentially reaching around €210 per ton of CO2 by 2031, with long-term stabilization around €100.
