Amazon trims corporate ranks
Amazon has announced plans to lay off about 16,000 corporate employees as it streamlines management and reallocates resources toward artificial intelligence, according to Bloomberg. The move marks another major round of job cuts across the tech sector.
In a company blog post, Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president for human experience and technology, said the company aims to reduce layers, increase accountability, and remove bureaucracy. Affected U.S. employees will have 90 days to seek another role internally and will receive severance and transition support. She added that Amazon does not expect to announce mass layoffs on a regular basis, though further adjustments remain possible.
The cuts bring Amazon’s announced layoffs to roughly 30,000 over three months, following an initial round in October. CEO Andy Jassy has repeatedly said pandemic-era hiring expanded management too far, while automation and AI will reduce some roles. Of Amazon’s 350,000 corporate staff, about 4.6% are affected.
Elsewhere in tech, Meta Platforms, Pinterest, Autodesk, and ASML Holding have also announced job cuts.
