Return of speed cameras is assumed to help municipal police
Since 2016, municipal police in Poland have been banned from using speed cameras. The Ministerstwo Infrastruktury addressed proposals to restore these powers after questions from left-wing MPs.
The ban followed criticism that local authorities used mobile cameras mainly to raise revenue rather than improve road safety. Now, some municipalities argue the lack of such tools limits their ability to reduce accidents.
However, the government remains cautious. Current analyses suggest speed enforcement should stay with specialized services like the police and road inspectorate. While the issue is under review, authorities see no urgent need to return these powers to municipal guards.
