Drone threat halts trains

Containers bound for China are arriving at PKP Cargo Connect’s Warsaw terminal, but Russian drone incursions into Polish territory may disrupt the next scheduled departure.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, many logistics operators abandoned Silk Road routes via Belarus and Russia, hitting the PKP Cargo terminal in Małaszewicze hard. Yet, just days ago, PKP Cargo Connect sent its first container train from Warsaw through Belarus and Russia to Henan, China. That shipment carried goods not only from Poland but also from Lithuania, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Germany.
Plans for another departure are now uncertain. “We are closely monitoring the situation and evaluating our options,” said Mateusz Izydorek vel Zydorek of PKP Cargo Connect. If the Belarus border remains closed, operators may return to sea routes—where voyages around Africa can stretch up to 50 days, compared with under two weeks by rail.
