Energy plan revised
Poland’s Ministry of Energy has unveiled an updated draft of the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) for 2030 and 2040, revising assumptions on coal, renewables and nuclear power. The document, taken over from the Ministry of Climate in August, outlines two scenarios: WEM (moderate transition) and WAM (accelerated transition).
By 2030, greenhouse gas emissions are projected to fall by 43% under WEM and 53% under WAM, rising to 61% and 75% respectively by 2040. Electricity demand is expected to grow to 200 TWh in 2030 and 270 TWh in 2040 as the economy electrifies. Renewables would supply just over 50% of power in 2030, but their 2040 share is lower than in earlier climate ministry forecasts, reflecting a stronger role for nuclear energy, including small modular reactors.
Hard coal demand declines sharply, while gas acts as a transitional fuel. Total investment needs for 2026–2040 are estimated at PLN 2.7–3.5 trillion.
