EU and Polish space sectors increasingly focused on security
Piotr Orleański, Director of the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences, says that Europe’s space sector is increasingly focused on security, causing most new space technologies to fall into the category of dual-use (civil and military). This marks a shift, as the EU and ESA previously avoided funding such projects. Poland is also redirecting priorities toward space security. Key areas include satellite-based Earth observation, secure communication and navigation systems, and monitoring of satellites and space debris.
The Centre operates a Crisis Information unit providing near real-time satellite data to authorities, and develops robotics for satellite servicing in orbit. Orleański notes that while funding for basic space science is shrinking, investment is growing in applied and defense-related space technologies.
