EU presses Poland on introducing a tax on excess profits

The European Union is pressing Poland to introduce a tax on excess profits for the energy, fuel, and coal sectors, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State Assets Jacek Sasin to journalists.
"The Ministry of Climate is taking the lead in the work on the tax on excess profits. The Ministry of Finance and State Assets are cooperating in this area. I want to emphasize strongly that this regulation is not our national idea. We proposed various other solutions, including for the energy sector, where profits have already gone towards freezing electricity prices. In this case, we are dealing with EU regulations and monitoring from the European Union to introduce these tax solutions not only for the energy sector but also for the fuel and coal sectors," Deputy Prime Minister Jacek Sasin said.
He added that work on a solution is ongoing and it is not yet known what it will ultimately look like and when it could come into effect. Most European countries have already introduced these solutions.
A few days ago, the CEO of PKN Orlen, Daniel Obajtek, spoke out against the introduction of a tax on excess profits. He pointed out that the company already bears PLN 14 billion in costs for freezing gas prices, wants to pay out PLN 6.4 billion in dividends, and has planned billion-dollar investments, of which around PLN 36 billion is for 2023 alone.
