EU Unveils New Defense Strategy

The European Union has launched a bold strategy to enhance its defense capabilities and reduce reliance on non-European military equipment. The European Commission presented the ReArm Europe/Readiness 2030 plan and a defense white paper outlining priorities for strengthening the continent’s security.
MEP Marta Wcisło from Platforma Obywatelska emphasized that Europe cannot solely depend on the United States and NATO, especially given the challenges faced in Eastern Poland due to the war in Ukraine and hybrid threats from Belarus.
“Projects like Tarcza Wschód are crucial to protect 500 million EU citizens,” she stated.
While NATO remains the cornerstone of European security, the new EU strategy advocates for independent defense capabilities. This includes developing joint air defense systems, increasing pan-European military exercises, and creating a fund to advance military technologies, boosting the defense sector’s competitiveness.
