Farmers no longer able to earn a living because of profitability crisis
Farming in Poland is becoming increasingly unprofitable due to rising production costs and weak crop prices, according to representatives of agricultural producers. Calculations by the Wielkopolska Izba Rolnicza show losses exceeding PLN 4,000 per hectare for grain corn and more than PLN 1,000 for winter wheat, while rapeseed remains marginally profitable. Many farms now rely heavily on subsidies and public support to stay financially stable.
Experts say the problem extends across Europe, with farm incomes under pressure in many EU countries despite modest overall growth in 2024. Farmers argue that supply chain imbalances are worsening the situation, as retailers and intermediaries capture a disproportionate share of profits. Industry groups are calling for stronger regulation, fairer margin distribution, and better cooperation between farmers, retailers, and governments.
