Finnish developer YIT wants to bring Scandinavian housing standards to Poland, including shelters in new buildings, turnkey apartments, and cooperation with local governments on protective infrastructure. Poland is becoming one of YIT’s key European growth markets. The company says shelters should serve everyday functions, such as sports or recreation, and be quickly convertible in emergencies. In Finland, existing shelter infrastructure can protect about 80% of residents. YIT plans to join tenders for shelter construction and modernization, arguing that about 75% of existing shelters can be upgraded. It is also preparing Poland’s first residential building with an S1-class shelter.

According to YIT Polska, adding a shelter raises construction costs by only 6-7%, making safety economically feasible.
