German press doubts Nawrocki

German newspapers paint Karol Nawrocki, sworn in as Poland’s new president on Wednesday, as a challenging partner for both Berlin and Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Sueddeutsche Zeitung writes that Nawrocki sees Tusk’s government as an opponent and intends to help PiS return to power. It argues he does not aim to represent all Poles nor cooperate constructively with Tusk’s coalition. The paper also criticizes Tusk for lacking a clear agenda beyond opposing PiS.
Bild highlights Nawrocki’s anti-German rhetoric, demands for war reparations, and past attacks on Tusk, predicting strained Poland-Germany relations. FAZ warns Nawrocki will complicate reforms on abortion law, healthcare, and rule of law, as many require his signature. It calls him a supporter of theories portraying Germany as suppressing Poland via the EU. Der Spiegel sees him as a Eurosceptic aligned with Trump-style politics, signaling a confrontational presidency that could bolster right-wing populists.
