Importation of used cars from abroad weakening as Poles choosing new options
Poland may be approaching a turning point in its car market after years of relying on very old vehicles, with the average car now over 16 years old. Imports of used passenger and light commercial vehicles are clearly slowing: in January 2026 they fell by 16.4% y/y to just over 64,000 units, the lowest level in three years. The decline is driven mainly by passenger cars, especially those aged 6–10 years, while only cars under two years old saw slight growth.
Several factors explain this shift: post-pandemic market normalization, falling prices of new cars, growing supply of young ex-lease vehicles, and the rapidly expanding offer of affordable new cars from China, which is attracting buyers away from used vehicles. Clean transport zones and lower resale prices further reinforce this structural change, raising the prospect of a younger vehicle fleet in Poland.
