Declining demand for coal is affecting not only Polish mines but also thousands of companies supplying equipment and services to the sector. In 2025, coal output fell to 42.8 million tons, down 1.2 million tons y/y, continuing a long term downward trend. Fewer mining operations mean fewer orders for machinery and limited investment, focused mainly on safety and maintaining current production.

Industry representatives warn that up to 200,000 jobs in mining related businesses could be at risk. Many firms are already facing liquidity problems and potential bankruptcy. Experts call for systemic support, including diversification funding and assistance in exporting mining equipment and services to countries increasing coal production, as well as expansion into new sectors such as defense.
