State seals PLN 500m coal miner redundancy deal
The Polish government formalised its financial support for the restructuring of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) — the EU's largest producer of premium coking coal — by signing an agreement on Friday to fund one-off severance payments for departing workers. Minister Balczun confirmed that around PLN 500 million (approx. USD 135m) has been earmarked for the programme, covering more than 1,000 workers leaving JSW this year, including 560 payouts due before the end of May.
JSW posted a net loss of approximately PLN 616 million in Q1 2026 after warning of potential liquidity problems last autumn. The ministry is still finalising a broader restructuring plan that some industry observers estimate may ultimately require 3,000–4,000 job cuts to return the company to a sustainable footing.
