Battle brewing over PIT thresholds in Polish government
High physician earnings may intensify Poland’s debate over raising the personal income tax threshold. Poland 2050 proposes increasing it from PLN 120,000 to PLN 140,000 annually, while the Finance Ministry warns that freezing the threshold supports budget revenues. Critics argue the current system unfairly penalizes salaried professionals, as more than 2.4 mln taxpayers paid the 32% rate in 2025. Meanwhile, some doctors and other high earners operating as sole proprietors can use a preferential 14% flat-rate tax and much lower health contributions.
The dispute highlights growing differences between employment contracts and business-to-business arrangements. Raising the threshold would benefit middle-income specialists but would not eliminate incentives for the highest earners to remain self-employed.
