US auto tariffs may hit Poland harder than steel duties

The Polish Economic Institute (PIE) warns that potential US tariffs on the automotive sector would have a greater impact on Poland than existing duties on steel and aluminum. While these metals account for around 5% of Polish exports to the EU, most (83%) stay within European markets, limiting the immediate effect of US tariffs. However, a shift in global trade patterns could increase competition within the EU.
The total value of Polish steel and aluminum exports to the US reached EUR 207 million in 2023, representing under 2% of Poland’s exports to the US and just 0.07% of total exports. Despite previous US tariffs under Donald Trump, Polish exports in this sector doubled by 2023 compared to 2018. PIE highlights that new US auto tariffs could have broader economic consequences, given Poland’s deep integration in European supply chains.
