Von der Leyen: we pay a very high price for dependence on fossil fuels
During 44 days of war in the Middle East, the EU’s fossil fuel import bill rose by over €22 bln, according to Ursula von der Leyen. She stressed that the crisis, including disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, is driving up fuel, food, and household costs across Europe.
Von der Leyen warned that the EU is paying a high price for its dependence on fossil fuels, which will remain the most expensive energy source in the coming years. Even if the conflict ends soon, supply disruptions may persist. In response, the European Commission is preparing coordinated measures, including joint gas purchases and strategic reserves management, while pushing for faster development of renewable and nuclear energy as more stable alternatives.
