Wujek Coal Mine has symbolically ended operations after 127 years, entering a four-year decommissioning phase starting April 1. Of around 700 employees, over 300 will work on closure processes, while others will transfer to different mines or receive support packages.

The site holds strong historical significance, including the 1981 pacification of striking miners.

Its closure marks the beginning of transformation. Polska Grupa Górnicza and the city of Katowice plan to redevelop the area, transferring 29 facilities and preparing about 100 hectares for new investments.

The project reflects Poland’s broader shift from coal mining toward economic and urban redevelopment.
