Automotive industry in Europe warns of loss of 350,000 jobs
The European automotive industry warns that the European Commission’s low ambitions for “Made in Europe” rules could cost the sector up to 350,000 jobs. The Commission is considering a 70% local-content threshold for vehicles under the Industrial Accelerator Act. However, a Roland Berger analysis shows that European content already reaches 89% in plug-in hybrids and 83% in battery-electric vehicles. Industry groups CLEPA and SDCM argue that weaker rules would allow heavily subsidized imports to benefit from policies intended to strengthen European industry.
They call for more ambitious rules of origin and a separate 50% threshold for critical technologies, including electric drivetrains and advanced electronics, while also urging lower energy costs, simpler regulation and better access to skilled workers.
