British parliament forces Theresa May to delay brexit
The bill forcing Prime Minister Theresa May to delay UK’s departure from the EU, proposed by a group of deputies to avoid leaving the Community on April 12 without a contract, was quickly adopted by both houses of the British parliament on Monday and entered into force.
Prime Minister Theresa May has already announced that she will ask the European Council for permission to delay leaving the Community until June 30, but the new law imposes a legal obligation on the prime minister to carry out this declaration.
Commentators expect that alternative change proposals will not get the necessary majority of votes. Moreover, any proposal of London does not have to be consistent with the final arrangements in this matter, because extending the exit process requires unanimous support from the other 27 Member States of EU. Without their consent, the United Kingdom would leave the Community without a contract this Friday, April 12.
