Poland ordered by Brussels to pay Pfizer PLN 5.6 bln for unclaimed vaccines
A court in Brussels has ruled that Poland must honor its contract with Pfizer and pay about PLN 5.6 bln for unused COVID-19 vaccines. The court found no legal basis to cancel or modify the agreement, rejecting arguments related to the war in Ukraine or declining infection rates.
The dispute stems from Poland’s refusal in 2022 to accept excess doses, with over 20 million vaccines already unused. Pfizer sued in 2023 to enforce payment for about 60 million doses.
The ruling increases pressure on public finances, as Poland faces rising healthcare deficits. Authorities have not clarified which institution will cover the cost, while the government considers possible legal appeals.
