Demographic crisis in Poland is underway - GUS

Poland is facing a significant demographic crisis, with the Central Statistical Office (GUS) indicating a decline in the number of births in 2022. This trend suggests a prolonged period of demographic challenges, distinct from the temporary crisis experienced between 1997 and 2007.
In 2022, the country recorded the lowest number of live births since the post-war era, with approximately 27,000 fewer births than the previous year, totaling 305,000. GUS warns that a return to a high fertility rate is unlikely, and the persistent low fertility rates could trap Poland in a challenging demographic situation. The aging population continues to grow, with 65-year-olds and older now constituting 19.5% of the total population.
