Dispute between residents and city erupts in Krakow over housing plans
For years, Kraków’s authorities encouraged industrial development in Rybitwy, a poorly ventilated district near the city’s main sewage treatment plant. More than 250 companies now operate there, employing nearly 20,000 people and generating over PLN 9 billion annually. However, the city plans to transform most of the 758-hectare industrial area into a modern residential district. Business owners fear future conflicts between industry and new residents, similar to the closure of Poznań’s racing track after noise complaints from nearby housing estates. Entrepreneurs argue they invested under stable planning conditions and now risk costly relocation.
City officials defend the project as a long-term strategy to improve infrastructure and living standards, while critics warn that mixing heavy industry with housing could create legal, environmental, and social tensions.
